In the Netherlands, nursing home organizations face challenges in providing appropriate care and maintaining quality of care, because of increased complexity of care and workforce shortages. In this Lunch Talk we will present how the nursing workforce is built up and how in our research studies nursing staff are empowered to take a leadership role in providing future proof care.
We will focus especially on the role of certified nurse assistant, which are around 60% of the nursing staff, and the role of nurse practitioners, who are authorized to perform procedures which were initially only reserved for physicians, such as prescribing medication.
In addition, we will highlight some of our nursing research projects on advanced care planning, low value care, evidence-based practice, communication according to the SBAR, evidence-based practice and equal collaboration with volunteers and family. Following our presentation, we would like to discuss how the nursing workforce in Swiss nursing homes is built up and how they are empowered.
