Projektbeschreibung

Background: Switzerland is well positioned to expand the introduction of advanced practice nursing (APN) roles with establishment of education programs, initiation of pioneer roles, and work to develop a regulatory framework. Substantive international data exists about the effectiveness of APN roles, but further evaluation is necessary to achieve expected role outcomes within the Swiss healthcare system. Few countries have systematically evaluated APN roles from their onset, resulting in a lack of evidence to support effective decision-making about the development, use and outcomes of these roles.

Aim:  This presentation will describe the development process, rationale and framework for evaluating APN roles in Switzerland.

Methods: Over a 2-year period APNs, healthcare administrators, APN educators and researchers from Switzerland, Germany and Canada participated in workshops and teleconferences. The international literature was summarized to examine outcomes and models for evaluating APN roles and complex healthcare interventions.

Outcomes: Healthcare decision-makers, researchers and APNs were identified as target framework users. Through shared learning, discussion and consensus a structure-process-outcome model was adapted for relevance to the Swiss healthcare system. Priority research questions and outcomes to be evaluated at different stages of APN role development were defined. Strategies for obtaining national input and disseminating the framework were identified.

Discussion: Collaboration within the international project team was effective for creating a comprehensive understanding and approaches to improve APN role evaluation.

Conclusions: The framework and its potential to be modified for different healthcare systems, will be of interest to other countries, especially those in the early stages of APN role development.
