Bastiaan Van Grootven is an SNF Ambizione fellow at the Institute for Nursing Science, University of Basel with a strong focus on quality of care for older persons. Bastiaan Van Grootven obtained a degree in nursing science with a specialisation in care for older persons, a PhD in biomedical sciences at KU Leuven (Belgium), and completed postgraduate training in biomedical statistics and evaluating complex interventions in health. He has previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the KU Leuven. Bastiaan is principal investigator of the projects ENGAGE (SNF Ambizione project) and Community (funded by Ebnet Stiftung). The ENGAGE project focuses on developing and evaluating a community-based program combining physical and social activities to reduce frailty and social isolation in older persons. The COMMUNITY project, focuses on generating actionable solutions to address frailty and social isolation in older persons through participatory methods. He is co-investigator of the RECOVER@HOME trial at the KU Leuven in Belgium, testing the (cost-)effectiveness of a geriatric home rehabilitation program for patients suffering hospitalization-associated disability. His work integrates research evidence synthesis, program evaluation methods, and individualized healthcare approaches, including prognostic modelling in program development and effectiveness evaluation studies. Bastiaan leads the courses quantitative research methods (Forschung Quantitativ) and the Research RoundTable Meetings (RRTM) at the University of Basel. He is consortium member in the projects INSPIRE (implementation of an integrated care program), In search of a good death (optimising quality of palliative care on geriatrics units), Connect! (screening of social isolation in the community setting), and REMIND (predicting unplanned hospital readmission on internal medicine units). Bastiaan is board member of the Belgian Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics and member of the European Academic of Nursing Science.
